As you look for a pet there is a lot to consider. Some pets need a lot of maintenance others less so. Fish tend to be on the lower maintenance side of the scale. Now that is not to say that fish need nothing more than to fill up the tank and toss food at them now and then. While they might not need the walking daily of a dog or the frequent cleaning of a bird’s cage they will need to be looked after and kept happy.
One choice you will have to make is to keep fresh or salt water fish. While neither choice is hard per say, salt water will require more monitoring meaning one more thing for you to keep up with. Either way one of the major things you will need to keep an eye on is the temperature of the water. Depending on the type of fish you keep you will need to keep the water at different temperatures, normally your pet shop will be able to let you know the correct range. You can find thermometers that give you the option to set your temperature or ones that stays at a single given temperature.
Additionally you will need to keep the tank clean. While it may sound like a lot of work at first it really isn’t. You will most likely have a filter that will keep your water fairly clean. You will have to change the cartridge in the filter at normal intervals to ensure the water stays fresh. There are also snails and certain fish that you can add to your tank that will eat algae to help keep the water clear and fresh.
In addition to this cleaning you will need to feed your fish. Most won’t eat much that much, but it will be a daily activity. Of course there are devices that will release a set amount of food each day. You’ll be able to take a few days off from feeding, but you will need to be sure that it is refilled before it runs out.
